Judiciary Committee to hold public hearing on citizen’s initiative LD 1378
Senate President releases statement on Judiciary Committee holding public hearing on citizen’s initiative bill on extreme risk protection orders
AUGUSTA – The Joint Standing Committee on Judiciary will hold a public hearing on LD 1378, a citizen-initiated measure that is scheduled to appear on the statewide ballot in November. The public hearing on proposed extreme risk protection orders, LD 1378, is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, June 11, at 3:00 p.m in Room 438 of the Maine State House.
"The Chairs of the Joint Standing Committee on Judiciary have made the careful decision to schedule a public hearing on citizen’s initiative LD 1378. This will allow the legislature to receive public input ahead of the November ballot. Judiciary committee members have been laser focused on ensuring Mainers have a clear voice on this complicated issue,” said Senate President Daughtry. “The hearing will allow for the formal consideration of public comment within the legislative process, though the final decision on the initiative will ultimately be made by voters at the ballot box. Any citizen’s initiative, on any subject, requires hundreds and hundreds of hours of intense work to get on the ballot. In respect of that work, these matters should always be decided by voters and not by politicians in Augusta.”
