Senate President Daughtry, Appropriations Chair Sen. Peggy Rotundo Respond to Governor Mills’ Budget Proposal
AUGUSTA — Senate President Mattie Daughtry (D-Brunswick) and Senator Peggy Rotundo (D-Lewiston), Senate Chair of the Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee, today issued the following statements in response to Governor Janet Mills’ proposed supplemental budget, which focuses on lowering costs and strengthening economic stability for Maine people:
“Maine people are feeling the strain of rising costs, and they need our state government to continue to be able to meet its commitments to help make life more affordable and predictable,” said Senate President Mattie Daughtry. “The Governor's proposal provides a strong starting point as the Legislature begins its work at a time of real economic uncertainty. With federal funding becoming increasingly unpredictable, Maine needs a thoughtful, creative approach that protects taxpayers and keeps our state on stable footing. Our responsibility is simple: build a budget that keeps costs down, keeps promises to Maine people, and keeps our state moving forward.”
“This proposal provides a strong foundation for the Legislature’s work in the weeks ahead,” said Senator Peggy Rotundo. “The proposed budget includes meaningful investments that support Maine families, strengthen essential services, and address some of the most pressing affordability challenges facing our state. The Appropriations Committee will now begin its thorough public hearing and review process to ensure these investments are targeted, responsible, and deliver the greatest benefit for Maine people.”
The supplemental budget will be referred to the Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee, where it will undergo public hearings and legislative review before consideration by the full Legislature.
